President Joe Biden signed an executive order on Oct. 30, 2023, regarding the use and development of artificial intelligence (AI). While this executive order is focused primarily on safety and security, it is only one piece of the regulatory framework that impacts AI development around the world.
National governments, the United Nations, and several states have either proposed or actually enacted legislation or programs that address AI. While these regulations vary in scope and legal effect, nearly all are aimed at ensuring data privacy, ethical applications of AI, and responsible governance of AI developers.
Understanding the various approaches to AI regulation will help contextualize the opportunities AI presents, as well as the attendant concerns it poses.
